Dear Alanis: A So-Called Musical Comedy

  • The Diving Bell Social Club 3996 Boulevard Saint-Laurent Montréal, QC, H2W 1Y3 Canada (map)

Since she was 8 years old and held the Jagged Little Pill cassette in her hands for the first time, comedienne, Tranna Wintour has felt a passionate, undying kinship with Canadian superstar, Alanis Morissette. In this hilarious (and hopefully poignant) show, Tranna dives deep into the musical universe of Alanis, connecting the songs and their themes (abandonment, perfectionism, self-esteem, neediness, spirituality, addiction) to both personal and collective, cultural moments.
What makes Alanis such a unique voice in music is not only her insane contortion of syllables, but her unmatched fearlessness in sharing her emotions. Her lyrics are unapologetic in their profound and almost painfully juvenile vulnerability. But she goes there, and she’s completely transparent, and holds nothing back. Can Tranna, a person so deeply self-protective and afraid of vulnerability, do the same? Is this perhaps the ultimate lesson Tranna needs to learn from Alanis? Can Alanis teach Tranna, and all of us, to tear down the walls of self-protection and be open to a deeper, healing kind of love, free from fear and ego? Is this the deepest comedy show ever?
On “I Was Hoping,” a track from 1999’s criminally overlooked masterpiece, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Alanis sings: “I was hoping we could heal each other.” And couldn’t we?

Featuring musical direction by Les Friesen. We'll be covering material from Alanis' entire career!
